Go get your bling on!
Well we’re approaching one week until Christmas and New Years is not far behind. Some of you may have already finished all of your holiday shopping – if so, congratulations, now all you have to do is wrap your gifts and wait to give them away! If you’ve already finished wrapping your gifts, that’s a little intense and maybe you should take a break.
There are, however, others who are not finished. Perhaps you have that last straggler person who is just so hard to find gifts for, or you are half way through your list or you haven’t started at all – eek! For the last minute shopping, here are some websites that compile great gift ideas for those hard to shop for, ok maybe easy to shop for but I have a week and need to expedite shipping, people.
Proclaiming itself as “The Buyer’s Guide for Men,” this site provides creative, classic, edgy, and humorous gift ideas of all price ranges.
From style recommendations for holiday travel, to leather shoe care kits, to gifts for bacon enthusiasts (I’d like to get the peanut butter bacon cups for myself), Uncrate delivers. I search on here for people like Adam, friends, and for our Michael. The website opens the world of male shopping behavior and culture.
But it of course isn’t limited to males. Though the fashion is gendered, anyone can be a bacon enthusiast! It offers movie and phone recommendations, and highlights some awesome accessories like trigger point foam rollers for sore muscles and a snazzy looking sake bomb set. These ideas are certainly not gender biased. But when it comes to your brothers, boyfriends, husbands, male whatever – get to uncrate for some creative, sometimes unexpected gift ideas.
DailyCandy is geared more towards the female gender. The website has a special Gift tab that, at this time of year, is chock full of helpful lists like:
- Gifts you want to Give and Get;
- Stylish Gifts that Give Back;
- 30 Gifts under $30; and
- Cookbooks for Foodies.
The writers for this website go above and beyond the average list. There are gift guides for your girlfriends, moms, and sisters by city! You could also refine your search for lists by item (jewelry, fashion, decor). There are lists for bakers, fitness gurus, gadget lovers, and relentless party planners.
Of course just as Uncrate is not gender locked, DailyCandy does well in coming up with lists for men.
Refinery29 is also city specific and everywhere like DailyCandy. Rely on this site to stay up with the latest trends, male and female, if you’re itching to get your fashion forward friends some new wardrobe items. Not to be left out of the gift guide monopoly, Refinery offers the What Men Really Want for the Holidays list and the 10 Best Holiday Beauty Sets. And you have to love them for their Sexiest Lingerie list for keeping things hot even in the winter and Donald Trump’s Holiday 2010 Gift Guide for the uber excessive, you can’t take it with you, what the hell gifts.
For discounts on hot designers check out Bluefly, Piperlime, Solestruck, and Yoox. If you’re a GiltGroupe member, there are lots of great gift list pages this time of year. Sort by person or by price range. The deals are hot and the ideas are nearly endless.
So now that you are strapped with ideas galore, its time to get that fire lit under your butt and get shopping!
It’s about that time again. September is here! Squash and zucchini overload the farmer’s markets, back to school sales are dying down (but still worth checking out), college campuses refill, and the beaches empty. It’s also the time to switch from tank tops and shorts to pants, long-sleeves, and sweaters.
This season, the runways have taken a neutral tone. Luscious camels, cozy creams, deep blacks, and shades of grey are everywhere. At first glance, one might think that the recession has made these great designers a little depressed. Though these tones don’t scream fall, they do allow for bright and bold bursts of burnt orange, or stunning plaids. Camel jackets that made a come back last fall are still around and a perfect way to warm up, but still hint at the deep fall color you’ve got beneath with a pop of red or purple.
Warm cozy fabrics and rich vibrant colors can still fill your closet’s palette. This autumn, floral prints are making a come back. Look for rich colors that make for bolder prints. Stand out in a print like Elie Tahari’s floral stretch cotton dress. Or find some subtlety in a cozy cardigan from Anthropologie.
Another trend to keep in mind this fall is military style. Call it utility, call it warrior wear, or call it military, if you’re wearing it, you’d better be rockin’ it like a fashion fighter!
Hunter greens, lots of buttons, great structure, and uber sexy bomber jackets all fit this trend. Rachel Zoe loves blacks, military greens, and camel colors (hmm, a nice complement with the neutral trend) for the military look. She recommends not to take it too literally. With things like a double breasted jacket or blazers with squared shoulders, a belt at the waist helps give the silhouette some femininity. There are all kinds of military jackets out there – check out these from Zara, Free People, and Banana Republic:
Thankfully, designers have been hard at work to make these pants stylish rather than bulky. In these, your hips won’t lie and say they’re three sizes bigger than they are – hello sexy skinny cargos!
If you’re not up for the military chic look or are looking for something to pop off that forest green, take a dive into the animal print trend. Keep it subtle with a printed belt, scarf, or a printed shoe. Or take it loud with a bangin’ leopard jacket. This trend is a fantastic way to express some spice and sexy flair to any outfit, work, casual, or on a hot night out.
For yet another sexy trend this fall, turn to Mad Men. This early 60’s style is back in action. Accentuate your curves. Get into a high waisted pencil skirt like Adrienne Vittadini’s in a to die for houndstooth (never out of style).
Find tailored blazers, blouses, and dresses with darting in just the right spots. Still have those skinny jeans that raged this last year? Well keep them on! They’re a perfect match to a plaid blazer and some knee high boots. With this style, its important to keep fit as the number one priority. If you’re in love with a coat or dress but the fit isn’t just right, don’t make the purchase if you can’t bite the bullet to get that perfect item to a tailor.
Finally, let’s get to those shoes. Happily, there are many trends to love here which means lots and lots of shoe shopping this fall! Get into lace-ups, like Rachel Zoe’s picks on Piperlime. Jump into some thigh high boots, tip toe in some kitten heels, or go Dutch in some clogs.
So as the weather cools and you contemplate that first fall stew, keep these trends in mind. Happy shopping!
Last night I was practically glued to the television for the 62nd annual Emmy’s! Though I don’t watch a lot of TV, I do love watching award shows and especially love the pre-show red carpet bonanza.
There were so many beautiful people and I was right there with the commentators analyzing and fawning over all the dresses. I have to say that my absolute favorite for the night was Claire Danes.
She glimmered and sparkled like a chandelier on the red carpet in this gorgeous Georgio Armani Privé gown. The gown was encrusted with Swarovski crystals and all-over sequin beading. I may have exclaimed from my couch, “I want to wear that right now!” She looked just lovely and walked away with an Emmy for her performance in the HBO miniseries Temple Grandin.
If you watched… which dresses caught your eye??

Let’s face it, it’s been a hot summer for most of you.
Most days all you want is ice cold water, watermelon, or ice cream. Or all three at once!
But for those of you who work in an office, or those of us living in San Francisco (where it’s been a miserable 58 degrees most days), you may be freezing during the workday!
I say: Resist the Snuggie! Request cashmere instead. 😉
Seriously, even during summer months you may find a need for a sweater that you can wear around the office. You’d like to not be freezing, but you’d also like to look like a grown-up, thankyouverymuch.
I’ve collected a few sweaters that I thought might do the trick to keep you cozy but not looking like an infomercial. In my opinion, cashmere is the best to strike this balance. But, it’s not always “in season,” or in budget, so the collection includes a little of everything.
Here’s a pretty little cashmere sweater from J.Crew that can keep you lookin pulled together.
Or you could try a White & Warren Cashmere Twist Top (not pictured) or this one, that’s on sale!
Or go a little ruffly with the Modcloth Nightfall Cardigan, or this beautiful Subra Sweater by All Saints (shown below)
I also love this long buttoned cardigan from BR (shown on the right), which looks lightweight and perfectly packable for your summer tote!
Here are a few more sweaters I found that are reasonably priced and office appropriate
It’s been a long time since I’ve said this to a pair of shoes, but… hello, lover!
Seriously, I have surprisingly put my little shop-a-holic tendencies aside this year and have not succumbed to fashion-website-browsing. But I did find these beautiful babies on Anthropologie and confess that I am tempted to splurge!
Perhaps it’s the description of the Waving Grain pumps that really got me: Quilted, golden-wheat leather undulates across this heeled pair as if rustling in an unseen breeze.
All poetic lusciousness aside, these kicks are quite adorable. They would spice up any outfit at work and they’d look so funky-fresh paired with some jeans.
The price tag is not so adorable, but for a gal who hasn’t spent too much this year on her wardrobe, I maaaay be able to justify snagging them. Perhaps I’ll have to go to the store and meet them in person, to see if they are as golden and glamorous as they appear in their photo. 😉
I just got a new catalog in the mail yesterday for a clothing store I had never heard of: Boden. The clothes in the catalog remind me of a mix of clothes from The Limited, Gap, AE, Anthropologie, and Ann Taylor. Sounds like a crazy combo, I know! They’ve been in the U.S. since 2002, so I’m not sure how they’ve gone unnoticed by a little shop-a-holic like myself.
The clothing caught my eye not because it’s “edgy” or totally fashionista (it’s actually relatively safe); instead it caught my eye because they have simple designs, great color combos, and offer lots of “essentials”. It’s a little more down-home, gal-next-door kind of store, but it’s different enough that you won’t blend in with all the other ladies in their go-to-school/work uniform.
They have a HUGE collection, so this may be a good place to stock up on the spring wardrobe! I do believe there is something in here for each and every Forney lady. Here are a few samples of catalog highlights that I thought a few of you might like!
