Christmas Cookie Recipe of the Day: Great-Grandma’s Buttermilk Drop Sugar Cookies

Posted in Food, Recipes by Elizabeth on December 6, 2009

This is not your average sugar cookie.  It is not flat and you do not need cookie cutters.  The result is more like a mini cake or brownie texture.  A great cookie to add some variety to the holiday sweets.  This cookie is a big hit and good anytime of the year.

Buttermilk Drop Sugar Cookies

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 5 cups flour
  • 1tsp baking soda
  • pinch of salt

Preheat the oven to 375o F.  Beat the butter and sugar until creamy.  Add the eggs and buttermilk and mix.  In a separate bowl combine the flour, baking soda, and salt.  Slowly add the dry mixture to the wet.  Beat until the dough is fairly stiff (you’ll need some good elbow grease for this one).  Drop small teaspoonfuls onto an un-greased cookie sheet and bake for 10-12 minutes.

  • 1 stick of butter, softened
  • 3 oz package of cream cheese, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Mix butter and cream cheese.  Add powdered sugar and beat until smooth.  I don’t always need the entire amount of powdered sugar for this so I usually add about 1 1/2 cups and mix.  And then add more as needed.  It is best to add sprinkles or decorations (if you so desire them) right after icing the cookies.  Enjoy!
